R.J. StricklandHONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Local divers will be competing in a tournament targeting invasive fish. The "Westside Roi Reckoning" takes place Saturday off Kahe Point.
The Roi or Peacock Grouper consume smaller reef fish. In Hawaii, Roi aren't food for eating because they're linked to Ciguatera poisoning.
"If nothing is done, the Roi will pretty much take over. They eat all the baby fish and once the older fish kind of die off or move out, the Rois just tend to really take over the area," said Kris Tyler owner of Westside Dive & Tackle.
"For sure, in the past few years, there's been less of the fish you'd like to eat and more of the fish you don't want to eat," said volunteer R. J Strickland.
The tournament is Saturday at Kahe Point Pavilion. Registration starts at 7:00 AM.
