MANOA, Oahu (HawaiiNewsNow) - You knew it wasn't going to be another sweep. But the 13th ranked Warrior volleyball team gave No. 2 Stanford all they could handle in a 5 set marathon at the Stan Sheriff Center Sunday night, 25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 34-36, 17-15.
UH fans came out fired up and helped boost up the intensity of the Warriors especially in the 4th set with UH trailing the match 2-1. In that fourth frame, Hawaii and Stanford played through 11 match/set points before Steven Hunt provided a thunderous kill from the 3-meter line to give Hawaii a one point advantage 35-34. That set up the 12th set point as Hawaii's Nejc Zemljack served and ace to seal things in Hawaii's favor 36-34. The 4th set alone took 44 minutes.
In the 5th frame UH jumped out to a 5-1 lead on a kill by Jonas Umlauft, the sophomore had 29 kills on the night. But Stanford showed the heart of a champion by rallying behind all-american Brad Lawson who tied the match at 15-15 with his 18th kill. A pair of kills by Eric Mochalski ended the Warriors night 17-15.
Hawaii drops to 1-4 (1-1 in MPSF) and will hit the road this week for a 2 match trip at UC-San Diego.
