Bows Blow by New Orleans

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team used a strong start to power past New Orleans, 82-58, Tuesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 15-10 overall with their fourth win in their last five contests.  
 
UH raced out to a 20-point lead just eight minutes into the game and staved off a pair of Privateer (15-12) rallies before picking up a comfortable non-conference win. UH led by nine points at half before building its lead to as many as 26 points in the second half.
 
Ten Rainbow Warriors got in the scoring column as the UH starters got limited minutes. Vander Joaquim took full advantage of an undersized Privateer squad notching 19 points and nine rebounds in 23 minutes. Joston Thomas poured in 16 points, while Shaquille Stokes provided 11 points off the bench. Jeremiah Ostrowski tallied 10 assists in just 25 minutes of action.
 
UH came out blazing and built a 20-point lead, 24-4, just eight minutes into the game. But the Privateers came back with a 21-6 run of their own to cut the deficit to just five points. The 'Bows eventually took a 39-30 lead into the locker room.
 
New Orleans continued to stick around early in the second half, again cutting UH's lead to just five points at the 16-minute mark. But UH scored the next seven points to extend their lead back to double-digits and were never threatened again. The 'Bows shot 52 percent for the game and held New Orleans to just 33 percent shooting.
 
The Rainbow Warriors now head to the road for three straight games, beginning with a non-conference game at Montana on Saturday, Feb. 18 as part of the Sears BracketBusters. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. MT (4:00 p.m. HT).
