HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Honolulu mayoral candidate and former
governor Ben Cayetano was released from the hospital on
Tuesday after spending two days under physician's care.
Cayetano, 72, was admitted to The
Queen's Medical Center on Sunday night after complaining of symptoms consistent
with a bleeding ulcer.
On Monday, doctors performed an
operation known as an endoscopy and cauterized a blood vessel in his stomach.
They reportedly found no other problems.
Doctors released Cayetano at 5 p.m.
today. He is expected to make a full recovery.
"We are extremely thankful to
everyone who has sent us their well-wishes for a speedy recovery for Ben,"
said his wife, Vicky Cayetano. "We are pleased with the news of his
release as he will feel much better resting in the comfort of his own home as
he prepares for this Saturday's primary election."
15 years ago, then-Governor Cayetano
collapsed from a bleeding ulcer. He was hospitalized for five days. His wife
says that this time, they caught the symptoms early.
According to doctors, bleeding ulcers
can be caused by bacteria as well as medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
The illness is common at Queen's, with two to three cases a week, mainly among
elderly patients.
